Preliminary Report on the Malawian Parliamentary and Presidential election

Other Issues:
As observers we have noted that there are very few women candidates contesting this election. Taking into account the cultural background of Africa and Malawi in particular we are area of the gender stereotypes that have taken root with respect to leadership. The gender desegregated data indicates that out of a total 1268 candidates nationally there are only 154 women, Malawi risks falling foul of SADC's Gender and Development Declaration which calls for at least 30 percent representation of women by 2005.
