AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION IN MALAWI: The Case of the Bimbi Cult
James N. Amanze
Although Malawi is now predominantly Christian and Muslim, African Tradition Religion still has a strong appeal. Professor Amanze introduces us to one of the territorial cults: the Bimbi Cult of the Upper Shire Valley. He provides a fascinating account of how the cult secures good rains, and discusses the crucial role of such a cult in an area dependent on its rainfall.

AFRICAN WILDLIFE & LIVELIHOODS: The Promise and Performance of Community Conservation
David Hulme and Marshall Murphree (eds.)
Conservation policies in Africa in the last decade have followed three main principles: 1) that conservation should be community-based; 2) that the things conserved should be managed to achieve both development and conservation goals; 3) that markets should play a role in shaping the incentives for conservation. This book examines just how successful community-based approaches have been in their twin objectives of conserving African environments and improving rural livelihoods.

THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE: Church Growth in the Free Methodist Church in Malawi and Zimbabwe
Henry Church
When the original Christian missionaries in Malawi were preparing for their hundredth anniversary, and the nation for its independence, new churches and missions caught the imagination of many Malawians. Several of these new mission churches were brought to Malawi by Malawians working abroad. One example was Moses Phiri, who brought back from Zimbabwe the Free Methodist Church. This church has since grown each year by at least 10%, and the author claims that this is largely due to the particular approach to theological education applied by the Free Methodist Church in Malawi, and later in Zimbabwe.
