Historical background Bvumbwe Agricultural Research Station (BARS) was established in 1940 principally aimed at assaying factors affecting the growth and production of Montana tung. The programme of work was, however, expended in 1950 to include investigations into improvements of dairy farming and the production of coffee, fruits and vegetables. Location Bvumbwe Agricultural Research Station is located 13 km south east of Blantyre on the Limbe-Thyolo road (150 55' S 350 04' E). It is 1174 to 1228m above sea level. Research Activities The Station coordinates research activities on horticulture. The station also conducts research on soil fertility and plant nutrition, tree nuts, grain legumes, cereals, plant protection, tissue culture, livestock and technical services. Bvumbwe Agricultural Research Station is responsible for Kasinthula Experiment Station and Ngabu Sub-station. Research facilities Bvumbwe Agricultural Research Station has modern laboratories with facilities for soil and plant analyses, identification of plant diseases and pests. Additionally the station has glass houses and a nursery for the propagation of planting materials, farm machinery workshop, seed testing laboratory and crop storage. It also has facilities for the production of mushroom and tissue culture laboratory for research into the cutting of bananas, roots and tubers. There is also a library with a sizable accession of assorted books, journals, periodicals and other documents. The station has adequate land for research activities. |

Human Resources Bvumbwe Research Station is headed by a Deputy Director of Agricultural Research and Technical Services who is supported by professional as well as administrative staff. The station has the following personnel:
