WOMEN FORM THEIR ASSOCIATION IN MINING Malawi Women in Mining Association (MAWIMA) was formed in october,1999 with Mrs. Emma Mphonde as its President. MAWIMA was launched on 1st August, 2000 by the then Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs, Honourable Alice Sumani (MP) with assistance from UNDP and FAWEMA.
The main aim of the association is to mobilize and assist women to successfully run mining and mineral ventures nation wide FIRST INTERNATIONAL MINERAL RESOURCES OF MALAWI EXHIBITIONS The ministry of Natural resources and environmental Affairs in conjunction with the private sector in mining organised the exhibition of which its theme was "Mineral Resources for Sustainable Economic Development in the New Millennium."
The opening ceremony of the international minerals exhibition was held at the Chichiri International Conference Center on 3rd August, 2000. The Vice President, The Right Honourable Justin Malewezi was the guest of honour. The international conference was sponsored by Press Trust, Group five international, Norwegian embassy, Toyota Malawi and Malawi development corporation (MDC).
There were ten countries and 35 local and international companies institutions that participated in the exhibition from 3rd to 5th August, 2000.
A mineral exhibition like the one mounted was an excellent way of getting all the important stakeholders to share their experiences. This was a forum where Government, Industry and University exchanged views and attempted to solve their problems
