NORMAL ENTRY PROGRAMMES: 2008/09 ACADEMIC YEAR


 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to apply to write University Entrance Examinations (UEE) for them to be eligible for selection into the normal entry programmes of the University of Malawi for the 2008/09 academic year. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

(a) General Requirements

i) Eligible candidates must have the Malawi Scholl Certificate of Education (MSCE ) or International General School Certificate (IGSCE) or other internationally recognised comparable 'O' level certificate with at least six credits including English Language obtained in 2007, 2006 0r 2005.

ii) Since IGSCE results are reported on an 8 point scale of grades, the following is the University of Malawi interpretation of IGSCE results for admission purposes: A* = 1; A=2; B=3; C=5; D=7; EFG=8. GCE A-Level results are reported on a 5-point scale and the University of Malawi interpretation of the grades is as follows: A = 1; B = 3; C = 5; D = 7; E = 8.

iii) Candidates who failed to satisfy the University entry requirements in 2005 or 2006 but succesfully improved their grades after resit in one, two, three or four subjects in 2006 or 2007 may use their supplementary statements for purposes of accumulating credits. Please not that for purposes for accumulating grades applicants cannot use two independent certificates, ie applicants who passed in 2005 or 2006 and were awarded a full certificae and sat again MSCE in 2007 and obtained a full certificate cannot combine grades from the two independent certificates.

iv) Candidates who fulfil the above requirements will be required to write the University Entrance Examination Scheduled for 30th May 2008 in centers to be located in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba. (Further details of the Examination venues and Registration shall be communicated in due course).

v) Candidates who for some reasons cannot take the University Entrance Examinations (e.g visually impaired, etc.) should apply to the University Registrar for a waiver prior to the examinations. Such candidates will be considered for selection based on the general criteria of six credits including English Language and specific faculty requirements.

b) Selection Criteria

  • Selection into University is based on merit computed from the aggregated score at MSCE or 'O' level equivalent examination and the score from University Entrance Examination score will each contribute 50% towards the final score used in the selection
  • Candidates will be placed in various faculties using specific faculty requirements, bearing in mind the candidates' choice of programmes or otherwise redirected to other programmes where the candidates do not compete succesfully in programmes of their choice.

(c) Specific Entry Requirements

Candidates with 'A' level requirements must have a minimum of three principle passes with an aggregate of at least 9 points obtained in 2007, 2006 or 2005. For purposes of selection, A level grades are interprated as follows: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1.

OR

a) Candidates with 'A' levels or IB qualifications are not required to take University Entrance Examinations

b) Candidates who were withdrawn from the University of Malawi or any other comparable institution of higher learning on Academic grounds, ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for selection.

c) To ensure a level playing field for all candidates sitting UEE, students currently registered in the University of Malawi including premedical training programme or in any other tertiary institutions such as Mzuzu University, Livingstonia University, Catholic University, Natural Resources College, Malawi College of Health Sciences, Malawi College Accountancy, etc. are not eligible to sit for University Entrance Examinations. Such candidates can apply for admission after completing their degrees or Diplomas through the Mature Entry Programmes.

Completed application forms should be sent to the University Registrar with application fees of k2000.00 (internals) and k2,500.00 (externals) ans U$300 for international applicants in postal orders or bank certified cheques. (The above fee is non refundable)
