From 29th March to 1st April 2005 the Ministry of Education held the National Education Conference in Lilongwe, the Capital City of Malawi. The theme of the Conference was " Education in Malawi, Policies, Strategies and Best practices in the 21 st Century."

The subdivisions of the theme are as follows:

Sub theme 1:
Curriculum Reform: This Sub theme covers problems and challenges in curriculum reform at all levels of the education ladder namely:
  • Pre-school Education
  • Primary Education
  • Secondary Education
  • Vocational, Technical Entrepreneurship Education
  • Higher Education
Sub theme 2:
Assessment and Evaluation: Under this Sub Theme, there are two areas to consider:
  • Continuous assessment at the classroom and school levels
  • Examinations which learners take at the end of a year and at the end of cycle such as at the end of primary or secondary school education level or at the end of the Teacher Training Programme.
Sub theme 3:
Management of Education: This area should cover holistically the problems and the challenges being faced by the system in the management of education in this country at all levels in:
  • Planning: This should address budgeting, coordination, monitoring and evaluation; policy analysis, costs sharing and decision making, donor aid
  • Inspection: This area includes school supervision, advisory services and inspection per se.
Sub theme 4:
Adult and Continuing Education and Special Needs Education

This Sub theme covers tow major areas:

  • Adult and continuing education
  • Specific Needs Education
Sub theme 5:
Cross-Cutting issues

This includes:-

  • HIV/AIDS and its impact on the delivery of education
  • Environmental education
  • Gender issues
  • Out of school youth
  • Education of vulnerable children
  • Guidance and Counselling
