Background
Information
The National Youth Council of Malawi is a statutory corporation
of the Republic of Malawi established through an Act of Parliament, The
National Youth Council of Malawi Act No. 22 of 1996.
The Council is autonomous, independent and non-partisan staturoty corporation
whose main mandate is to promite youth participation to allow youth realize
their full potential inall endeavours.
Structure and Membership
The governing body of the Council is the Board of the council which
is constituted of:

7 youth representatives from 7 registered youth NGOs.

3 members appointed by the Minsiter responsible for youth.

3 representatives from religious institutions.
-
1 member from women's organisation.
-
8 ex-officio members representing line ministries.
Objectives and Functions
The National Youth Council of Malawi aims to:
-
Develop, promote, encourage and coordinate all forms of youth acativities
in Malawi.

Facilitate and encourage cooperation among registered youth organisations
in Malawi.

Initiate operation and management of non-profit making and profit-making
projects in support of youth development.

Organize and promote scholarships for youth workers, members of youth organizations
and relevant officials.

Foster the promotion of training courses.
-
Registration and support of youth organisations in Malawi.
-
Advise government and any authority either specifically or generally on
matters relating to youth, sport and recreation.

Develop and institute guidlines for cooperation between govaernment and
other organisations and agencies operating for the youth in Malawi.
In all these areas, the National Youth Council of Malawi
plays a strong advocacy role for the youth of Malawi.
Program Areas and Priority
Target Groups
The Council recognises the need to provide opportunities for all youth
in Malawi regardless of status.
In view of this, Concil will endeavour to promote the participation
of disadvantaged youth in all its programmes and activities.
The priority youth identified are:

Deviant youth

Female youth
The priority areas for action by the council are:

Youth economic empowerement through promoting the education, training and
youth livelihoods skills.

Science, technology and Environment

Population, health and environment

Social services, recreation, sports and culture.

Adolescent reproductive health
Fact
...More than half of the population of Malawi is below the age of 25,
which indicates that Malawi is a youthful nation; and that the youth are
the nation today and tomorrow. The youth are energetic, adventurous, industrious,
strong... and willing to learn.
