MINUTES OF MALAWI SDNP COORDINATION UNIT STAFF MEETING HELD ON 11TH MAY 1998 AT SDNP COORDINATION UNIT OFFICES AT THE POLYTECHNIC IN BLANTYRE

MINUTES

CU/39/98 The PC called the meeting to order at 2:30pm.

 

 

FOLLOWUP ON PREVIOUS WEEK ACTIVITY PLANS

CU/40/98 It was reported that the AA had made a follow-up on the NESU workshop and that everything was in order. The PC and AA will be in Lilongwe from 12th to 16th May 1998.

CU/41/98 The PC told the meeting that the Filing Index prepared by AA for SDNP files was now of very good standard.

CU/42/98 AA’s assignment of developing a payment voucher was noted to be pending.

SUN WORKSTATION

CU/43/98 IS explained that the Sun Workstation for SDNP was still registering faults diagonized to be originating from power supply.

 

 

 

INTERNET CONNECTION AT POLYTECHNIC

CU/44/98 IS told the meeting that Dr Faparusi was expected to present to him the network and e-mail setup for the Polytechnic network.

CU/45/98 IS explained that there was no monitor available from Polytechnic to be used for the Linux and e-mail systems training at SDNP and also for e-mail connection to UNIMA. This prompted the PC to borrow a PC from UNIMA for this purpose.

CU/46/98 It was reported by the IS that he was still working on the establishment of a Training Program for Regional node Operators.

CU/47/98 PC told the meeting that an application to the Polytechnic Registrar for another extension line from Polytechnic Switchboard to SDNP offices was made.

CU/48/98 PC told the meeting that contacts with an upstream ISP (UUNET) for international Internet Connection were done.

PURCHASE OF SDNP EQUIPMENT

CU/49/98 It was reported by PC that purchase of SDNP equipment was done by UNDP H/Q in New York apart from a Sun Workstation. All equipment was said to be waiting for shipment to Malawi and PC would make a follow up on the issue.

REGIONAL NODE OPERATORS

CU/50/98 It was noted that PC had contacted Chancellor College requesting for office space and identification of a regional node operator under its establishment. Mzuzu University and NRCM would be contacted soon.

SDNP STAFF HEALTH INSURANCE

CU/51/98 PC told the meeting that he wrote a letter to UNDP Resident representative to Malawi on Health insurance for SDNP staff. A follow up on this issue will be made after an official reply to this letter.

 

 

 

INET ’98

CU/52/98 PC told the meeting that an e-mail message on IS’s application to the INET ’98 was sent to Raul Zabrano of UNDP (New York), Brian Christensen of UNDP (Malawi) and a copy of the message was also sent to Chuch Lankaster (Director of SDNP Worldwide).

CU/53/98 PC reported that he was asked to meet the Registrar of Companies to register the SDNP.

 

ACTIVITIES FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK

TRAINING FOR SDNP STAFF

CU/54/98 AA Put together documents for NESU workshop.

AA Attend "Reporting Workshop on National Execution" at MIM in Lilongwe.

IS Complete training program for regional node

operators.

IS Complete summarized workplan for IS from the detailed 3 months workplan giving approximate duration.

IS Study Fidonet e- mail (UNIMA).

IS Continue intensified Linux training.

IS Check if Router manages to do classless addressing. (For information on how to do this, check on INET’ 97 Workshop CD on track two).

DATE OF NEXT MEETING

CU/55/98 There being no other business, PC closed the meeting at 3:20 pm and asked for another meeting to take place on Monday 18/5/98 at 2pm to evaluate progress for the previous week.
