ACB nicks former Air Malawi employee

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a former Air Malawi employee for alleged corrupt practices in facilitating passage to foreigners by check ing them in in absentia and bypassing immigration exit checks in counters at Lilongwe International Airport (LIA).

Bureau director Gilton Chiwaula said yesterday Patrick Boti, one of two suspects, did this to enable foreign nationals including the Congolese to travel to Europe with- out necessary documents.

He said the ACB, yet to make more arrests in connec tion with the issue, arrested Boti based on a tip received on August 6,2001 that some air- port staff at LIA were facilitat ing illegal passage of foreigners.

Chiwaula said Boti is further alleged to have assisted two for eigners obtain air tickets and Malawi passports and accom panied them to the United King dom.

The suspect, said Chiwaula, has been remanded on bail pend ing prosecution.
