WORLD VISION INTERNATIONAL aims at serving the poorest of the poor by undertaking various interventions that are designed to assist them to realise their own potential within their own cultures; and to create an existence in which there is economic, social and spiritual self-determination.
Working in partnership between the poor , the church and itself, WORLD VISION seeks to develop the under privileged communities in Malawi through projects in areas like; Agricultural Development, Food production, Health care & Family planning, Environmental Rehabilitation (afforestation), Emergency relief and rehabilitation and Child sponsorship.
CHILD SPONSORSHIP
Todate, child sponsorship remains World Vision Malawi's best known work through which a link is offered between donors, the world over, and the children in Malawi. Currently, there are over 35,000 Children in Malawi being sponsored by donors from all over the globe.
This assistance has helped the sponsored children directly, and their families and their communities in general, in areas such as health, food security and education, with an ultimate goal of enabling communities to care more for their own children.
THE LOCAL SITUATION
World Vision Malawi has three orphan care centres spread in the three regions of the country. The centres are benefiting from locally-generated resources. There is one at Chavala in Chikwawa District, another at Kakhome in Kasungu District and at Bandawe in Nkhata Bay District. At these centres, children are offered a benefit package of education, sound nutrition, good health, IGAs and spiritual nurture. HOWever, this intervention is very far from satisfying the growing need among orphans in the country.
WHY YOU MUST DO SOMETHING
In all the three centres, as well as elsewhere
in the country, there are many more unsponsored children than there are
sponsored ones. (This creates a strain on the existing limited resources
as well as animosity toward the sponsored children by the unsponsored ones).
Meanwhile, the orphan problem in Malawi continues to grow at an alarming
rate. According to WHO statistics, there are almost three parents
dying and 10 more orphans in an hour and it is estimated that in Malawi,
there will be over 600,000 orphans by the year 2000, which is only months
away. These are catastrophic figures by any standards and with the
donor fatigue now prevailing in the developed world, it has become incumbent
upon every right-thinking Malawian to play an active part, however humble,
to help alleviate the plight of orphans and disadvantaged persons in our
midst. As the saying goes, 'today it's them, tomorrow it will be
you'. You can't afford to sit back and watch. You need to do
something. once again, THE WORST MISTAKE YOU CAN MAKE IS TO DO NOTHING.....
BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU CAN'T DO MUCH.
