EDUCATION

Education opportunities for Malawians, although limited in the past, are increasing at a steady rate as the Government is making a concerted effort to open up the education system to all people including private sector investment. The most notable item in the calendar of educational development in the country for the coming five years will be the construction of the proposed second university in the north of the country and the building of more primary and secondary schools to cater for increased demand after the introduction of the free primary school education system which has successfully taken off with minor hitches. With the advent of free primary school education, more classroom blocks are expected to be erected, more teachers trained and houses built for them to match the increasing enrolment numbers.

Thus the existing secondary schools will either have to be expanded or new ones built. But what is more important is the encouragement of the private sector to involve itself in secondary school education development so that more opportunities are created for the growing population of school students. The University of Malawi now has over 3000 students enrolled in varied disciplines.

The government place a lot premium on education from primary to secondary and tertiary levels.
