Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) was established in September 1997 with the overall objective of promoting and strengthening a culture of human rights. The Centre has been involved human rights work in Malawi from June 1996 when it initiated its activities on a pilot basis. The Centre was officially opened by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General Hon. Peter Fachi on 20 August 1998.

One of the main functions of MHRRC is to provide Funding resources to local NGOs and civil society organisations. Guidelines have been developed to help the Grants Committee of the Board of Trustees in their evaluation of project proposals presented to them for Funding. MHRRC is currently funded by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through the Danish Centre for Human Rights (DCHR). The Centre also receives funding from Cordaid, a funding agency from Holland, Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom and also from German Technical Cooperation(GTZ).
