The establishment of a university in Lilongwe, Malawi, is said to be one of the major objectives of President Bingu wa Muntharika's administration on national development and on improving education in Malawi.

The Office of President and Cabinet has announced the creation of the Working Committee on the establishment of the Lilongwe University of Science and Techmology.

This committee was announced under the newly reconstituted Department of Science and Technology. The Department is said to consist of:

• Science and Technology Division,
• Planning and Monitoring Division,
• Finance and Administration Division,

In addition the Deaprtment of Science and Technology would also be responsible for:

• The National Research Council of Malawi, NRCM,
• The Working Committee on Lilongwe University of Science and Technology,
• The Secretariat of the Working Committee on Lilongwe University of Science & Technology,
