TEST & TRAINING CENTRE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES (TCRET)

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT - CHOMA/CHIGWERE BIOGAS PROJECT

Mzuzu University, through the Test & Training Centre for Renewable Energy Technologies (TCRET), is implementinq the Fight against Climate Change Project In Choma/ Chigwere area, north east of Mzuzu City. The project is being funded by the British High Commission in Malawi. The main objective of the project is to reduce the emission of methane from aerobic digestion of cow dung in open air, which is released into the atmosphere. Methane is twenty one times more potent in causing global warming than carbon dioxide. Methane generated anaerobically under controlled environment will be used by the households for domestic thermal applications instead of firewood and charcoal thereby reducing deforestation in the area. Beneficiaries will use the effluent from the biogas digesters as fertiliser in their gardens. This will contribute to food security at household level in the project area.

The Fight against Climate Change Project will officially be launched on Thursday, 2nd October, 2008 by His Excellency Mr. Richard Wildash, British High Commissioner to Malawi, at Ruguwa Mhlanga Village, Inkosi Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
