There are four major universities in Malawi. A list of tertiary training institutions that are recognised by Government is available here. The growing list of universities are:

1. University of Malawi,
With head offices in Zomba and colleges in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe

2. Mzuzu University,
Located in Mzuzu. A new website for Mzuzu University is being constructed here

Located in Rumphi on the Nyika Plateau

4. Catholic University of Malawi
Located in Chiradzulu District, Malawi

Additionally, there is an initiative, by government, to establish a Lilongwe University of Science and Technology.

Admission to start University studies at first year is usually done by selecting students who have completed and passed secondary school examinations. Candidates are often required to sit entrance examinations or to pass interviews, which have sometimes raised concerns. Government and other stakeholders offer scholarships and a loan scheme is available.
