After the items have been set and reviewed, moderation takes place. This exercise is done at the Board's offices. A panel of moderators, another group of experienced subject specialists with high integrity, goes through all the items to satisfy themselves with their quality. They, among other things, check syllabus coverage, errors, level of difficulty, format and mark allocation. They also check marking schemes to make sure that these are really answering the questions and that the marks awarded are commensurate with the demands 'of the questions.

The moderators, subject officers and all personnel involved in the moderation exercise also take an oath of secrecy and they are thoroughly searched by security personnel as they leave the Board's offices. It must be emphasised that moderators- are a complete set of professionals who were not involved in either setting or critiquing.
