2. THE UN MALAWI MISSION STATEMENT ON GENDER

The Mission Statement on Gender states that all UN Agencies in Malawi have:-

"Agreed to initiate concerted actions by establishing a coordinated clear concept and a practical approach for responding to initiatives aimed at integrating a gender perspective in country policies and programmes; as an effective way of achieving women empowerment and gender equality."

Athough the different UN Agencies are specialised in their work, their concerted actions can have a greater impact in mainstrearning gender in their programmes especially when a focused coordination is created to augment the sharing and pooling of resources, and the ongoing mutual support of joint activities already existing among them. The Joint Gender Policy Statement is also necessary to give guidance to individual agencies.

"To ensure the institutionalisation and continuity in the implementation of the UN Joint Gender Policy Programme, the office of the Resident Coordinator will play a monitoring role in the process of this implementation."
