4. PRIORITIES AND ISSUES FOR JOINT ACTION

The main issues identified for joint action relate to gender concerns as highlighted in Government Policy Papers, particularly the Platform for Action and the Policy Framework for Poverty Alleviation Programmes.

Among the specific and identified areas requiring more support by UN are:-

  1. Strengthening National Institutions'Capacities and Abilities for Gender Mainstrearning when Developing         National Policies and Programmes,
  2. The Enhancement of Women's Participation in Policy Making,
  3. Recognising Women as Important Agents of Change,
  4. The Promotion of Women and the Girl Child's Human Rights, and
  5. Building Capacity to Undertake Gender Focused Research Methodologies.
For Malawi, the UN endorses the government's Poverty Alleviation initiatives which call for a coordinated and inter-sectorial effort in addressing gender imbalances in the country. In this light, the UN shall:-
  1. Endeavour to  assist in strengething the Government's capacity of re-orienting its development activities towards Poverty Alleviation.
  2. Continue supporting programmes and activities already adopted and being supported by the UN, UN Agencies and Missions in Malawi.
